As terrorism, global economic crises, military coups d’etat, earthquakes, internal political strives dominate the agendas in Turkey, as well as in the region and throughout out the world, all of us started suffering from lack of motivation. Our priorities altered. We seem unable to produce new social-communal projects, and even seem to ignore existing issues. As a result, the quality of our life-style is derogatorily affected.

As for me, partly due to certain health problems, this is the first winter which I am going through in such quietude, without any productivity. I hear the same complaints from my friends. It is as if we are weighed down with tons of heavy loads and are unable to move.

Loss of motivation blunts hopes. When hopes get less, the will to do some work is also lost. Nowadays I think that we have to start again somewhere. We have to regain some motivation to overcome unfavourable conditions around us which lower the standard of our lives and join our forces to find resolutions for existing issues, to achieve the synergy to create projects which would be beneficial to our community.

It is my belief that thoughts will lead to ideas; ideas will lead to projects, projects will trigger the urge to work and successful projects will trigger other projects. That is why I used the heading “come on, let’s get a move on” for my article. I wish to acquaint you with an exemplary project of a non-governmental organization which supports social activities. Meanwhile, I await your views on other similar examples.

The Ölüdeniz Rotary Club started working on a Botanical Park based on the concept of a “quiet park” at the end of the main street Çalış on a green area of 3.000 square metres. This is one of the spots which are indicated as greenery by the Fethiye Municipality. On the basis of the project, first of all, various plants, trees and flowers already in existence in this area will be cultivated. Later on a landscape will be organized with illumination and seating facilities. Upon completion of the project, we shall be able to sit in the shade of a fully green tree, on a bank among flowers, reading our book – newspaper and having a rest in this beautiful park throughout winter and summer…

The President of the Ölüdeniz Rotary Club, Derya Göksan, wants to create this park in collaboration with everyone. He wants to share the project with all who know about soil, trees and flowers, who may come forth with suggestions as well as moral and financial support and make a present of the created beauty to Fethiye.
