The year 2006 has gone down to history as best to be forgotten by some. For others it has been a memorable year always to be remembered. For some time we have been following news and magazine programs in the newspapers and TV channels how the year has gone by with pleasant and unpleasant events… Among them there is some good news, especially for our community such as a Turkish author winning the Nobel Award in literature.
While every passing year is evaluated with good and painful events, I always think that some things that are not taken into consideration may prove very significant in the future. For example, as we make a list of pleasant and unpleasant events of 2006 and close the book, we do not include the babies born during the year, as we cannot know beforehand whether they will prove to be devilish of angelical 20-30 years later. Just as when Saddam Hussein was born 67 years ago, he was not recorded either as good tidings for some or as the disaster of the year for others.
The fact that events whose outcome in future years cannot be foreseen beforehand and which may prove to be awards or punishments in the subsequent period stresses how small things which we overlook at the time may play a significant role in the future of our world. The funny thing is we can make a certain guess about the punishments but have a difficult time to foresee the bestowed gifts.
As for me, I believe that the terrorist acts of ETA in Spain, threatening the communal peace and the execution of Saddam Hussein in Iraq during the last days of the year are the greatest punishments of 2006 carried over to 2007. I fear that the bloodshed by ETA in Spain, which was representative of peace and reconciliation for a long time, will awaken terrorism from its long hibernation in Western Europe.  Similarly, I am afraid that the hasty execution of Saddam defying traditions and customs will jeopardize the unity of the state in Iraq and activate the religious-ethnical clashes. I only hope that both punishments will be compensated during 2007 and the subsequent years without further disturbances.
I have no idea what gifts 2006 turned over to 2007. So far as I can see, the only gift is ”hope” just as in previous years.  In other words, I cannot say whether the war in the Middle East will be ended, whether Fenerbahçe will win the UEFA Cup, whether the tourism season will be a favourable one, whether the new President will be someone favoured by the majority of the population, or whether the salaries of the workers and the civil servants will be raised adequately. Yet I am doing my utmost to preserve my hope to see the best outcome on such matters. “Fortunately we have our hopes.”
For all of you I wish for a new year in good health and happiness and may you achieve all you hopes.
