We all know how important water is for human life. We cannot survive without water. As the world population increases, the quality and the quantity of natural resources which have a direct impact on our lives, such as water, occupy a special place on  the agenda of almost every settlement. The diminishing and pollution of water resources in the world constitute a serious threat for the lives of human beings and other habitats. Therefore, various non-governmental organisations are involved in numerous activities under the leadership of the United Nations to warn, enlighten and train people about the preservation and correct utilization of water resources.

In Fethiye, we live in a geography where the water reserves are perhaps the richest in Turkey. Water sprouts from the resources and flows with a loud, roaring sound. To use up this abundance nonchalantly, taking no precautions for preservation and against pollution constitutes a threat to our lives.

Preservation and correct utilization—that is the secret! Rains and snow will fall, the water collected on the ground will form a bed and flow down from the slopes towards the sea. As more water is accumulated underground, it will find its own route—its own veins– and flow towards the sea. As for us, we shall use the water resources above and under the ground for our own needs. If we set the forests on fire and destroy them, thus preventing the rainfalls and snow; if we construct barriers and buildings in riverbeds for the sake of profit; if we drain our waste water into the rivers, there will come a day when we shall be yearning for a drop of fresh water…

Similarly, the rivers where we have constructed barriers and buildings in their beds to gain some income will overflow, fed by the rains and, while searching for another outlet, will turn into floods, carrying everything on its way to wherever it can. That is the time when the power of water is no longer a gift for life. In the face of what has been demolished and carted away by the floods, we can only describe its might as a wrath which causes loss of lives and destruction of homes…

Last week we lost 40 of our people due to floods at Thrace and Istanbul. In each location of natural disasters, it was the same old story: the water was taking revenge on humanity for filling up its river beds for the sake of profit…

They say, water is life. The greed for money of some turned water into a death agent. I hope the people who brought about this disaster for the sake of making a profit are now deeply grieved. If they have not learned their lesson, the mighty water may flood over them as well one day…
