In the face of record increases in the cost of petrol, the airline companies are attempting to take all sorts of measures to maintain their profits, ranging from flying with less speed to announcements such as “Deal with your toilet requirement before you come abroad”.
The air transportation sector of the world is heading for a great dead-lock due to an increase of 93 per cent in petroleum prices within the course of one year. Unable to meet the rises in cost, 24 airline companies went bankrupt during the last 6 months. Companies, which cannot increase the price of the tickets for fear of losing customers, are trying every means to lower the cost of the fuel.
Various airlines, including Northwest and Singapore, have cut down the water supply in the tanks for toilet facilities by 25 per cent to ensure less use of petrol. The China Southern Airlines of China warn the passengers to take care of their toilet requirements prior to flight.
The Japanese Airlines have banned the sales of beer except for passengers in first class, thereby carrying 93 kilos of less weight per flight.
Cathay Pacific lightened the weight of the planes by 200 kilos by peeling off the paint.
The American and Southwest Airlines in the United States used to clean the jet engines only during the routine maintenance in the past and are now washing them one of one at the end of every day. Southwest achieved a profit of 1.6 million dollars already by this procedure.
Nowadays pilot fly the planes at an average of 770 km. per hour instead of 800 km. In this manner a flight of four hours is extended only by 6 minutes and 600 lt. of less fuel is used up. EasyJet decreased the speed of the flight by 2 per cent while BMI lowered its speed by 5 km.
The British Airways recommend its pilots to land by gliding.
