Two days of heavy rain, and at least two more on the way, in the popular holiday spot Bodrum have halted daily life in the small city.

Many streets in the city turned into rivers as the infrastructure could not carry the burden of the heavy rain, leading people to have difficulties in going home and to work. As traffic units of police and municipal patron officers warned people about heavy rain prior to its start, cars and motorbikes were removed from roads where flooding was expected, leading to no material damage. However nearly 20 houses and work places remain under rainwater.

Even Olcay Tosunoğlu, 36, who is a cook working in a restaurant only 300 meters from her house, had difficulties going to work, as he was trying to reach the restaurant by walking on nearby walls. Tosunoğlu said this is an old issue for Bodrum and it is still unresolved. “Life in Bodrum turns into a nightmare in the winter,” he said. A group of students who came to Bodrum for a weekend holiday also had difficulties due to the flooding. Rain is expected to go on for another two days.
