At Yatağan, two iron bridges built by Italians in 1919 were both demolished during the last 5 years. The Iron Bridge, built by Italians in 1919 to transport military supplies from Yatağan to Milas, collapsed in 2005 as a truck loaded with ore passed over it. The Iron Bridge, which had not been registered by the Mugla Preservation Committee until that date was entered into registration by the Mugla Committee for Preservation of Natural Treasures after its collapse Similarly, the iron Kayırlı Bridge, also built by Italians in 1919 to carry military supplies to Aydın, collapsed two years ago as a truck loaded with ore travelled over it.

While the decision of the cities special administration and allocation of funds from the general budget were anticipated in connection with the historical Iron Bridge which collapsed 5 years ago, the Directorship of the cities special administration claimed that in as much as it was registered and approximately 800 thousand TL was calculated to be necessary for the re-construction, it should be funded by the general budget. Dr. Mehmet Nil Hıdır, Mugla deputy from AK Party, stated that he had taken the matter up with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, adding, “Our Ministry pointed out that the bridge represented no hindrance in transportation and there was no traffic in the area and that there were still various villages in Turkey with no roads; therefore the funds should be allocated primarily to villages with no roads and water.”
On the other hand, the Kayırlı Bridge, also built by the Italians to carry military supplies to Aydın, collapsed in October, 2008i as a truck loaded with ore passed over it. In spite of the warning at the bridge prohibiting the entrance of heavy-duty vehicles,. A heavily loaded truck attempted to pass the Kayırlı Bridge, causing it to collapse. Although it was constructed at the same date as the Iron Bridge, it was not registered as a cultural treasure to be preserved
Ali Üstün, the Chief of the Yava Village, stated that he had presented petitions on four different dates to the City Special Administration for the reconstruction of the bridge, and continued as follows: ”Four districts of the Yava Village make use of this bridge. There are approximately 125 houses and a population of 280 settlers in the Memişler, Kayırlı, Kocamustafalar and Çobanlar districts. Children from these districts have to travel 5 kilometres instead of 200 metres to reach school during winter months. To come to the district from Dipsiz, Yatağan, one has to go on the Mugla-Aydın highway, turn towards Yatağan, arrive at Kafaca Kaplancı Village and then pass through the tunnel to reach his destination. We have explained these conditions to Mehmet Nil Hıdır, the Mugla Deputy of AK Party. The 600 thousand square metres of field on the other side of the bridge is not cultivated because it takes too long to reach there. We wish to have the bridge re-constructed urgently with funds allocated either from the cities special administration or the general budget.”

Bulgarian Vyacheslav Stoyanov, starting out on a bicycle for a clean world, arrived at Fethiye.

Travelling 2117 kilometres to reach Fethiye, the Bulgarian cyclist wishes to relay his rebellion against the use of vehicles on engines and to prove that it is possible to live in a world with no garbage. His tour will cover Syria, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Spain, France and Italy, coming to an end in Istanbul.
Bulgarian cyclist, Vyacheslav Stoyanov (38), who is an Industrial Designer, started on a Mediterranean Tour for a world without garbage and arrived at Fethiye, Mugla.
Previously in 2009, within the framework of a social activity entitled Factor Foundation in Bulgaria, he cycled along the Black Sea Coast of 6 thousand kilometres in 45 days under the slogan I THINK, and in the same year he toured along the Greek coastline of 4 thousand 800 kilometres in 39 days. Vyacheslav Stoyanov said that he intended to complete the Mediterranean Coastline Tour of 23 thousand kilometres in 10 months. The Bulgarian cyclist, Vacheslav Stoyanov remarked that he was always willing to fulfil his liabilities for a world without garbage, adding, “My aim at touring along the Mediterranean with my bicycle is two fold. My first aim in getting on the road with the slogan I Think is based on he fact that numerous people prefer to use vehicles with engines for transportation. Yet using a bicycle is not harmful to nature at all. I decided to make this tour of 23 thousand kilometres to encourage the use of bicycles. Ever since I started out from Istanbul, I witnessed several derogatory aspects of numerous vehicles with engines. My second aim is to achieve living in a world without garbage. I saw thousands of heaps of garbage on the way which caused me great distress with my flag, I shall try to relay that it is possible to create an environment without any litter.”

Gökhan Durmuş, who came to Fethiye six years ago and started making demonstrations of Freestyle motor which was totally unknown in Turkey, is now getting ready to display shows throughout Turkey. At the Motoplus 2010 Motorcycle, Bicycle and Accessories Fair to be held in Istanbul between the dates of the 25th and 28th of February, a freestyle motor demonstration will be displayed by a Turkish sportsman for the first time.

Born and raised in Germany, Gökhan Durmuş came and settled in Fethiye six years ago and will be the first and only representative of Freestyle motor demonstration which is not known in Turkey so far. Gökhan Durmuş was involved in this field of sports as an amateur during
the years he lived in Germany and continued doing upon arrival here. He was greatly surprised to learn that he was the only one doing this sport in Turkey and realized that he should introduce it to everyone. Durmuş chose Fethiye because motocross races were being held and there were motor clubs of national calibre here. He is continuing his work and training on the track he had built with his own means. About three years ago he broke his leg and had to stop his training, but started again six months ago, achieving his past performance during his training sessions in Fethiye, he jumps over ramps he has built himself and displays various movements on his motorcycle mid air, much to the awe of his spectators in the district. Durmuş, the only Freestyle representative of Turkey, points out that he takes all the precautionary measures for this sport which is quite a dangerous one. At the opening of Motoplus 2010 Fair, he will make a demonstration with his German friend, Robert Naumann, displaying such acts as double Cordova, Cliff Hanger, Heel Clicker, Superman Seatgrab, No Foot Can Can and Nothing. Talking about freestyle motor demonstration and how he started in this field, Gökhan Durmuş commented as follows: “I want to familiarize everyone with this sport which I am doing as an amateur in Fethiye. I chose Fethiye especially for this purpose because motokros and other motor sports are held here and there is a sub-structure for this purpose. This week I shall make a demonstration with a friend at the Motoplus 2010 Fair in Istanbul and introduce this sport to the public. I am the only Turk involved in this sport. I am looking for others to shape up a team.”

The Ethnography Museum, set up by the Ölüdeniz Municipality three years ago, awaits its visitors. Almost forsaken traditions and customs of rural life in Anatolian villages have been portrayed with wax paints and put on display.

Three years ago artist Tülay Aktaş prepared approximately 100 human figures using wax, representing almost forsaken traditions and customs of life in Anatolian villages. There are figures scenes from the henna party, shaving of the bridegroom, women cooking bread at ovens, ox and carriage, women spinning wool, women milking, bringing the bride on horse-back, elderly granny and grandfather, shepherd blowing his fife, women harvesting grass and doing laundry. The figures ranging from 30 centimetres to 1 metre seem almost real at first glance. They are displayed in two separate rooms and have been waiting for visitors for the last 3 years. Coşkun Karabulut, the Director of the Art House of the Ölüdeniz Municipality, made the following remarks: “ Our Ethnography Museum was started by the initiative of the Mayor of Ölüdeniz, Keramettin Yılmaz, and his wife, Ümit Yılmaz. We requested painter and sculptor Tülay Aktaş, to prepare the figures. We established this museum especially to enlighten our children about almost forsaken Anatolian traditions and customs as well as nomadic life. We wish to familiarize our children with the old Anatolian life-style, the tools used in the past, all the equipment for activities ranging from cutting grass to harvesting and kneading flour. We invite everyone, especially children, to our museum to be better acquainted with the old life-style.”

If you like the music of Glen Miller, the Rat Pack and the classic hits of the 40’s and 50’s, Çalış Carnival Committee are inviting you to take a trip down memory lane when they hold an unusual evening of live music and song.

The nostalgic evening featuring swing music from the big band era will take place at the Koç Sun hotel in Çalış on Friday 19 March. Live entertainment will be provided by popular talented local singer Paul Wynter (former Midlands Entertainer Of The Year) who will get you “In the Mood” to dance as well as by the ladies of Çalış’s own choir, the “Sunset Singers”, who will be inviting you to sing along with them to some all time favourites. Although themed dress for this unusual evening is optional, there will be a bottle of wine for the winner.

For the entrance price of only 20 TL guests will receive a three course meal of lentil soup or cheese rolls followed by a choice of either pan roasted chicken (plain or spiced) or Turkish meat balls, both with chips and salad, or a vegetarian dish of fresh vegetables and noodles served with a soy sauce. There will then be a choice apple pie and cream, lemon cheesecake or tiramisu for desert.

The management at the hotel will be donating 2 TL from every meal as well as a donation from their reasonably priced drinks to the Çalış Carnival Charity, helping disadvantaged children in the Çalış/Fethiye area. For guests who do not wish to drive, the hotel which is located on Bariş Manco Bulvari (just past Aydin Pide), is also able to provide overnight accommodation.

As space is limited, booking is essential. Please contact the Çalış Carnival Committee on 0535 8554919 or 0536 3739520 for more information and to book your table.

For all keen amateur photographers, here are early details of the 2010 Çalış Carnival Photography Competition.

The annual competition, which is sponsored this year by Calis based “English & More” International Learning Centre, is open to amateur photographers of all ages. For the first time this year, thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, there will be cups for the 6 adult winners of the various categories PLUS cups for the 6 Junior winners (under 16 years old). There will also be certificates for the 2nd and 3rd placed entries in all categories.

There are six categories for you to enter:

Humorous
Portrait/People
Wildlife/Nature/Animals
Seascape/Landscape
Cultural/History
Black and White/Sepia – any subject

The one major condition of the competition is that all photographs must be taken in Turkey. Contestants can enter one photograph in every category and the photographs can be mounted or un-mounted (but not framed). The entrant should put their name and contact details and the category on the back of the photograph or mounting board.

The winners will be chosen by an independent panel of judges including sponsors English & More and professional photographer Hakan Sahin of Fethiye.

Entries should be handed in to FETAV Office, Kismet Bar or Val’s Bar in Fethiye or into the Nil Bar or Golden Moon Estates office in Çalış. The closing date for the competition is Tuesday 18 May.

All of the photographs will be exhibited as part of the Carnival Exhibition on Çalış seafront on Saturday 29 May.

Even if you are not in Turkey you can still enter the competition when you are out on holiday or you could get someone to bring your photos out for you. Unfortunately the Carnival Committee cannot accept e-mailed photos as they cannot be responsible for printing these entries.

Entrants should be aware that all photographs entered will not be returned but will become the property of the Çalış Carnival Committee and may be used in future carnival publicity projects. For example some of the photographs entered in previous years have been featured in the Carnival Calendars and on charity Christmas cards.
