FIG SCHOOL VISITS
Category: F.I.G NewsAdd Time: Ara 8th, 2009Author: adminFIG SCHOOL VISITS
On the sunny day of Tuesday 1st December Fig visited two schools, the first was Sahil Ceylan school, which happened to be the first school we ever visited back in 2004. It is situated behind Kemer not far from the village of Ören. Sahil Ceylan now teaches students from the nursery class through years 1-5 and has about 55 pupils. They have a well equipped computer room and we were given a demonstration of the online English lessons the pupils were able to take themselves through, it was very impressive. They are also able to download various science lessons and display them on a large screen so that the students can see things which would otherwise be impossible. On this school’s wish list is a photocopier, a selection of books, especially for class 1, some pin boards for the walls and several pairs of shoes so that the teachers can give them out as needed. We were able to leave sweets and pens and pencils for every student and we will work on meeting the other needs as soon as possible.
Our second school was in the village of Paşalı on the other side of Ören. This school has a new nursery class and teaches years 1-3, before the pupils are old enough to be bussed to the larger school in Ören. The original entrance was lined with white mulberry trees, which have now formed an impressive arched avenue. Here we learned that the nursery teacher was in her first post and had been rather disappointed to find very little equipment. So as soon as possible we shall see that they have tables and chairs suitable for 12 students and receive various toys and craft equipment, so that she can enjoy her work more, especially as her posting to this school has separated her from her husband in Aydin! We gave each of the nine nursery students who were present one of the lovely tops that have so kindly been knitted for us. We shall also be donating a good supply of reading books for the children of the other classes, plus some basket ball equipment for them to play with.
We were grateful as ever to Fethiye Özel İlköğretim Okullu for lending us one of their buses and drivers and to Kadriye and Unal Bey for accompanying us.
