F.I.G. stands for the Fethiye International Group. “International” because we are supported by people of many nationalities.

Our aims are simple … ‘To promote the education and welfare of children in the locality of Fethiye, through fund raising and voluntary activities.’ We do this through various activities and provide help ranging from bursaries for university students to books for village schools.

BOOK EXCHANGE

A note especially for our summer visitors. Many of you bring books with you for holiday reading; you can exchange them at the FIG library for just one lira for a new book to read or, if you don’t want to take a book back home, please consider donating your book to our library. The book exchange is very popular so new titles are always sought.

AFTERNOON TEA IN THE COUNTRYSIDE, Sunday August 13

For a delightful afternoon out in the countryside near Ovacık, join us for tea, sandwiches and cakes in the garden of the Yakamoz Hotel. This delightful mountain location provides a breath of fresh air, away from the heat of Fethiye. Home-made cakes of course, tea (including Earl Grey), soft drinks including pomegranate juice, salmon and cucumber sandwiches – a wonderfully cool way to enjoy an August afternoon. The price is only 15 ytl which include a generous donation to FIG so do please make a note of the date and come along.

Directions to Yakamoz from Fethiye: Take the mountain road to Olu Deniz up through Tasyaka and take the first turning RIGHT as soon as you see the AZDA supermarket sign. We are 1 km down the track and clearly signposted.
Directions to Yakamoz from Olu Deniz/Hisaronu: Take the mountain road towards Fethiye; take first turning LEFT after Turk Petrol.
BOOKS FOR SALE

FIG has 3 books for sale, the first is our Turkish cookery book, drawn up from an earlier cookery course, at only 5 lira an excellent way to learn some of the secrets of the rich Turkish cuisine, all the proceeds of this book go into our funds. The other 2 booklets are about Kaya village and Tlos respectively, giving useful background information about these two areas, very reasonably priced at 4 lira each, half of which will go into our funds.

NEW DRAMA GROUP

Playwright Dr John Murdoch would like to know if there are enough interested people to put on one of his plays in Fethiye.  We have the scripts of two of his plays The Eligible Male (a pleasant piece of nonsense about getting married) and Sheherazade which has been successfully running in Munich, where some time ago it won the Theatre prize in the Munich Festival.

If you have skills, experience and interest in forming a theatre group please give your names to Sue Tekin contact details below or leave your name and contact details on the list in FETAV.
CAFÉ FIG
Our Wednesday lunchtime coffee morning is a popular meeting place when in Fethiye.
It’s just two minutes from our offices next to the sarcophagus to the Tadım Café where we meet, on the harbourside so not too far to walk. We offer filter coffee and Nescafe, tea and Earl Grey tea, cakes, and biscuits and a relaxed atmosphere for chatting, reading, playing Okey or Backgammon. Why not arrange to meet your friends here when in town and stay for a chat and some refreshments, make new friends too.

SON OF FIG!
Thanks to the good offices of Mandy at The Lycian Centre in Hisaronu, we now have another place where you can donate any unwanted items of clothing or just items you no longer need or use. More on this in next week’s article.
