PREVIEW: FETHIYE CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

5th Fethiye Benyamin Sönmez Classical Music Festival
Karagözler,
Göcek & Babadağ, Fethiye
21st - 24th September 2016

Now in its fifth year, the Benyamin Sönmez Classical Music Festival is returning to Fethiye. The festival, which is a four-day celebration of the world's classical repertoire, welcomes artists and orchestras from all across Turkey.

The music festival is named in honour of Benyamin Sönmez; a young and exceptionally talented classical cellist, who tragically died in 2011 at the age of just 28 after a heart attack in Ankara.

The festival has a new home this year. The main venue will be the Rowing Club Stadium in Karagözler, Fethiye – which is just opposite the Daffodil Hotel. Beginning at 9pm for four consecutive nights, concerts will be played against the backdrop of yachts, Fethiye Boat Yard and the Mediterranean sea.

In addition to the night-time performances in Fethiye, Göcek's D-Marin will be host to three sunset soirées, each beginning at 6pm, and one early-evening concert will be held at the summit of the Babadağ mountain in   Ölüdeniz at 5pm.

Highlights of the festival include:

- Cambridge-based, leading concert pianist Gülsin Onay.

- The Mimar Sinan Double Bass Quartet, Istanbul.

- Muğla Municipality City Orchestra.

- 21-year-old cellist Poyraz Baltacıgil, who amongst other accolades was winner of the 2014 Benyamin Sönmez National Cello Competition.

- Çelliçel from Mersin; one of the youngest and most successful chamber music groups of Turkey.

- Anatolias Wind Quintet (Anadolu Nefesli Beşlisi).

Benyamin Sönmez (1983 - 2011)

Benyamin Sönmez was born to Turkish parents, Ünal and Fatma Sönmez in Bremen, Germany in 1983.  Ünal was a saz-playing musician who earned a living playing at weddings. Benyamin grew up surrounded by and playing with traditional instruments such as Kanuns, Uds, Darbukas and the Saz. It was when Benyamin and his older brother Mehmet went along to their father's gigs that their respective talents were first recognised. Mehmet was sent to a conservatory in Belgium and Benyamin entered the Hacettepe Conservatory in Ankara at age 13, which is where he first began playing the cello. Benyamin gained acclaim after being chosen first in a cello concert at Ankara’s Bilkent University. Later he trained in Stuttgart under the Russian cellist Natalia Gutman, who invited him to study with her in Moscow. This time in training was financially difficult, and although his education was sponsored he still slept rough in train stations, which once resulted in him being beaten and jailed by Russian police. However this period also provided great opportunity to meet notable writers, artists and musicians.
His professional career took him all over the world and he performed to high acclaim and awards. He played at festivals such as Schleswig Holstein (Germany), Oleg Kagan Festival (Germany-Russia), Adam Cello Festival (New Zealand), RNCM Manchester Cello Festival (England) and the Istanbul International Music Festival. He met Mstislav Rostropovich (considered to be one of the 20th century's great cellists), who described Sönmez as “the god of cello” and he was invited to play in  Rostropovich's 80th birthday concert series.
Benyamin Sonmez died on December 1, 2011, at the age of 28, after a heart attack in Ankara. Following a funeral ceremony at the Hacettepe University Conservatory, his body was transferred to Fethiye – by now his family's home town - where he was laid to rest.
