In order not to be dragged down by fatigue and headaches, spend some time with your loved ones, think positively and take long walks. Remember to stay away from alcohol and cigarettes and make eat lots of seasonal fruits.
After a long winter, spring has now arrived and you can prevent the spring blues by taking these simple steps. To stop feeling weak, fatigued and sleepy and having a headache all the time, take long walks over the weekends, spare more time for your loved ones and go shopping now and then.
Dr. Tavuz Furuncuoğlu, the internist and head of the obesity clinic of the Göztepe Hospital Complex and Medical Park, stated that some ailments were most frequently experienced during the spring and autumn, saying, “There may be other causes to illnesses displaying fatigue as a symptom. This is generally a temporary state of affairs. Nevertheless, during the spring months, allergic reactions, faulty heart and blood circulation systems, rheumatism, ailments of the respiratory system and stomach upsets are observed more frequently.”
Dr. Yavuz Furuncuoğlu explained that the syndrome of spring fatigue is temporary and listed what should be done for a more comfortable spring: “During the spring months there is excessive negative electricity in the air which can reduce make it hard to think positively. We must avoid being pessimistic and sceptical.
If we are not able to be involved in sports, we must definitely spare some time for walks at the weekends. We must drink lots of water and eat frequently but in small portions. We must consume more seasonal fruits. We must stay away from alcohol and cigarettes as much as possible, because alcohol and cigarettes wear the body down. At first they are enjoyable but then they make us feel bad when we get up next morning.”
An apple a day
Gizem Keservuran, Nourishment and Diet Expert of the Göztepe Hospital Complex of the Medical Part, stated that we could overcome the spring fatigue by consuming foods that are antioxidant, benefitting our immune system. Keservuran made the following recommendations: “At breakfast do not consume foods from delicatessen but eat 1 fresh fruit or a small bowl of fruit salad. Especially, to strengthen your immunity system, consume a small sized Amasya apple every day.
Do not become pessimistic, have an easy time during spring.
-Start the day with a good breakfast.
-Stay away from alcohol and cigarettes.
-Eat frequently but in small portions.
-Take care not to go hungry but don’t fill up your stomach.
-Consume vegetables and fruit.
-Do not neglect to drink water.
-Stay away from stress.
-Take a walk in fresh air.
-Join in friendly chats.
-Do not remain aloof. Be sociable.
-Do not forget to laugh.
-Detox with a special veggie drink.
Get your LIVER ready for the spring, both to prevent gas and feeling bloated and to enjoy the taste of your food. For your drink of detox you need 2 cucumbers, a handful of softer leaves of artichoke, celery leaves, a pinch of parsley, 1 thick red pepper. Wash and prepare the vegetables, mix in a blender, sieve and drink the delicious juice.
Have your meals with your loved ones.
Aylin Yılmaz, NUTRITION expert, listed the preventive steps for spring fatigue as follows:
-Choose healthy food! During winter months most of us consume food with lots of calories and very limited fresh vegetables and fruit. The amount of vegetables and fruit must be enhanced and the oily items must be lessened
-Add snacks! Instead of eating a lot at one go, set up a programme for regular nourishment with snacks.
-Take in an average of 2.5 litres of liquid per day.
-Drink less tea and coffee. Do not take more than 1 cup of black coffee and 1 glass of tea. .
-Drink green tea.
-Do not add extra salt to your daily food.
-Cook your food in the oven or on grill.
-Take care to consume seasonal foodstuffs.
-Stay away from packed and frozen food.
-Stay in locations where you feel comfortable and spend time with your loved ones. Do not forget the positive effects of sunshine and daylight on the spirit.
-Another important factor is to have regular sleep. Do not alter your sleeping habits. It is most important to go to bed at the accustomed time and sleep as much as is needed.

Since the recent two decades, the issue of human rights has been rather controversial in one of the rising powers of East Asia, the People’s Republic of China. In parallel to the economic development of the country, this critical issue has attracted a great deal of attention at international arena.
The interventions and prohibitions of the ruling government along with the sanctions imposed on people in different spheres of life pose a problem due to the violations of some crucial rights and freedoms. Particularly, the violation of political, religious, constitutional and social rights and freedoms granted to the Chinese has been at stake, which was verified with the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989.
Furthermore, some notorious policies such as capital punishment, one-child, residency permit system and huji system (household registration record) are not appreciated by world public opinion and it can be argued that they are not in compliance with internationally recognized and adopted conventions, agreements and declarations.
Besides, the censorship both on media and Internet lead to rise in the infringement of freedom of press and expression. In this regard, the right of people to get and release information is restricted, such that the terms of “democracy” and “equality” is banned in the search engines and internet tools.
Additionally, the tight control on the religious activities is another concern with regard to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, because the attitude of the government towards the spiritual and religious movements is not compatible with the noted declarations that cherish and promote the freedom of belief.
Last but not least, the racial discrimination and favouritism of the officials in power against some of the nationals is another challenging case to be handled. Considering all these approaches and the position of the Chinese authorities in terms of human rights, it is necessary for China to undergo a renewal process in order to keep pace and be on good terms with the other countries. In this sense, along with her economic development, it is crucial to foster the social development and to make improvements in human rights issues in the PRC.

We live in a town of contradictions. I say this whenever I think about it. Sometimes I am amazed at the turn of events and fail to see the reason behind them. To cite an example: I have never been able to understand why a tomato paste factory has not been established in Fethiye, which is the second largest producer of tomatoes in Turkey. There is no establishment for fruit juice, either. Yet, we send tomatoes and fruit to factories established at Bursa at a distance of hundreds of kilometres.
During the last meeting on getting a trademark, I noticed certain contradictions in the final evaluation of a public survey for SWOT analysis. One could not help feeling amazed. Participants were asked what was the most potent aspect of Fethiye in tourism. Among 12 various responses, the majority replied as “Its Rich History”. According to participants in the public survey, the greatest potential of Fethiye to attract tourists is its history; yet at the same time these historical remains of Fethiye are victims of a fate worse than death due to negligence and lack of maintenance. You may think I am not aware that the Antique Theatre has been restored, the Citadel has been renovated, the Necropolis has been cleaned up, all repairs and maintenance work has been carried out with no problems encountered in sub-structure or transportation to the antique cities in the region.
In this section of the public survey, those who ticked the “Cultural Wealth” are about one quarter the respondents who chose “rich history”… The same is true for those who selected “Gastronomy” as the most potent aspect of Fethiye. I guess I must have missed out on books written about the Gastronomy of Fethiye, the existence of a great number of specific restaurants and special local dishes; therefore this evaluation took me by surprise. I have been a tourist guide for years. Up to now I have never met tourists who claimed to have been impressed by the Gastronomy in Fethiye (or even knew about it).
I was also surprised about the results of the public survey in the SWOT Analysis on the subject of “Threats”. In the section questioning “The Most Important Factor Threatening Tourism in Fethiye”, the majority were concerned by “expatriates operating houses they have purchased as hotels”. See the contradiction? Aren’t the people expatriates rent their houses to incoming tourists to this town? In other words, as a result of it, isn’t there an increase in the capacity of beds and the number of tourists coming here? If so, how come such a practice constitutes “A Prominent Threat to Tourism in Fethiye”?
When I tell you the fourth alternative ticked in the “Opportunities” section of the SWOT Analysis, I am sure you will not know what to think, just like me. Because participants who consider the expatriates renting our houses as a threat also believe that “expatriates living in Fethiye” are a good opportunity for the development of Tourism in Fethiye. Expatriates living in Fethiye are an opportunity for the development of Fethiye; but their renting out their houses so that more foreigners can come here constitutes a threat to tourism. What sort of reasoning is this?
I guess it will be best not to be guided by such public surveys from now on…

A report suggests that a healthy diet of home made baked beans and spinach is the way to avoid obesity.

According to Mehmet Reis, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Reis Foodstuffs, who inaugurated the “No to Obesity”, Turkey is fast becoming the most obese country in Europe because the table culture is abandoned and inactive, unhealthy generations are being raised.

During his childhood, Mehmet Reis lived at Inebolu, Kastamonu, having his meals a the table set on the floor, enjoying the aromatic tarhana (Chickpea, yogurt and tomato) soup with red dog-wood, pilaf made of bulgur and dried beans prepared by his mother.

As the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the leader in pulses, Reis Agricultural Products Industry and Commerce Inc., Mehmet Reis stated a prominent campaign in Turkey entitled “Healthy and Balanced Nutrition against Obesity” based on this diet.

Complaining that Turks have lost their taste for traditional dishes, Reis claims that he can no longer experience the old taste of yoghurt, pickles, chickpeas and lentil meatballs. He is also upset about such a vast change in traditions, table culture and family life from years gone by.

He welcomes us at his office with the tea he has made himself behind his desk… He gets up now and again to feed some pigeons at the window with rice and lentils. I ask him whether the campaign enhanced sales of pulses and he laughs…saying “yes but this was not my objective.”

“Well, the sofra (low wooden table) set on the ground may be replaced by modern tables, and wooden spoons may have been replaced by steel ones, but I don’t want to witness the degeneration of our culinary history and culture and lose the taste for our traditional foods. I don’t expect anyone to eat dried beans every day! Vegetables should also be cooked at home.”

He continues, “Once a week, while dried beans are being cooked, vegetables such as spinach and fresh beans must also be on the menu. In fact, I would like to have our children and grandchildren enjoy days for which I have such fond memories and for which we increasingly yearn as we grow older.”

“Because, it seems that with the passage of time we are losing both our physical and psychological health.” According to Mehmet Reis, some modern housewives consider home-cooking a hard task and the children can taste dried beans only at their grandmother’s house.

The cause of obesity, spreading throughout the world from the USA, is though inactive life and unhealthy nourishment. Reis explains why he has started such a campaign by saying, “I want to offer support. Nourishment in Turkey has become a serious issue and certain steps should be taken at once.” Mehmet Reis says that coordination must be achieved among the sellers of pulses, the government, the Ministry of Health, Schools and families because both our health and our funds are threatened…

Are our habits of nourishment altered?
Research was carried out in 13 cities during July 2009. The questionnaire was directed mainly towards women 45% of who did not know how to cook dried beans, chickpeas or bulgur. The youngsters were not familiar with dishes prepared with black-eyed beans, peas, kidney or borlotti beans or broad beans.

What is your suggestion to alter this?
We are guided by the slogan “Traditional Taste, Healthy Generations”. We want health institutions, NGOs and the media to work hand-in-hand to increase community consciousness and inform the parents though education. This is because a healthy life is founded on the understanding of what is a balanced and nourishing diet that must also form part of a healthy life-style.

What is the rate of consumption of pulses in Turkey? Is it true that Turkey was alike a granary?
Unfortunately the term ‘granary’ is becoming a thing of the past… For many products we are almost totally dependent on imports from abroad. What is even worse is the fact that we are exploited by some foreign investors, who are only interested in the Turkish agricultural sector as a way to increase their own commercial ventures, which are ultimately to our disadvantage.

They are taking the seeds growing in our country and developing them in their own country for profit. The most significant examples of this are the green lentil in Canada and beans and chickpeas in Argentina and the USA. Here seeds exported from Turkey are cultivated and then sold back to us. Nowadays, all the hills and mountains are visited throughout our country only to collect samples of our plants.

I tossed and turned the whole night through. The moment I close my lids, all the events I read in the papers and watched on TV, appear before my eyes; my heart misses a beat.

Honestly, when was the last time I came across a piece of good news? Suicides, arrests, bloody and a bloodless murder, resistance, fights; in the end all our eyes notice is a black sky instead of a bright blue one. No, it is useless, no sleep for me tonight. It is almost daylight. It is best to get some fresh air.

As soon as I opened the balcony door, he slipped in with multi-coloured flowers in his hand. Seeing him so early in the morning, I felt exhilarated. We hugged each other. “It’s been such a long time,” I said, yearningly. “I thought you were never coming.”

He smiled, “Don’t,” he said. “You mean you still don’t know me after so many years? Have you ever seen me break my promise?” He was right. I had never seen him go back on his word. Neither the endless rains, nor the long, freezing winter nights, nor storms, nothing prevented him from coming.

“He” always knocked on my door with sparkling eyes, holding multi-coloured flowers and to the sound of chirping birds, making me feel ashamed that from time to time I lost hope and worried “what if he never came…” “Once again you caught me unawares,” I said hastily. “The house is a little messy, I am sorry.”

He smiled with his usual tenderness. “Messy?” he said. “Never mind. Today, tomorrow or the day after or next week you can tidy up. I am not here just to look in and go…” Then he winked at me. “You tell me about your heart,” he said. “Is your heart in a mess?”

This time he really trapped me. “Well, actually I…I…” All of a sudden, I started stammering. “I know I should have welcomed you more joyously. But, believe me, I have spent numerous sleepless nights. I close my eyes but not my heart. My heart is rebelling constantly and does not permit me to keep my eyes closed.”

He was surprised. “But why?” he asked. He took my hand and took me to the window. “Look,” he said. “Look how your roses have bloomed beautifully. The sky is deep blue… And you, instead of enjoying this moment, you still keep thinking of long winter nights and storms…”
I bowed my head. “I know,” I said. “Actually you are right. But… My heart is too weary to go after a cloud. Even the smell from those beautiful flowers seemed false. Disappointments, lack of love and security enveloped us. It has been a hard winter…I was scared that my heart would freeze…I closed all my doors tightly.

Still I could not help feeling cold and shivery. At certain instances I could hardly breathe. When I learned about the youngster who committed suicide because he was deeply distressed when his mother was arrested because she could not pay the cost of his courses, how could I sleep peacefully in my bed?

As we are headed towards an uncertain direction at full speed, when values of humanism are replaced with self-seeking, the moment we wish to talk about ‘rights and justice’, the crows start cawing to suppress our voices; all these wore me out.”

He came closer and put his arm around my shoulders with compassion. “You are right,” he said. “Everything is in a mess! A thorough spring cleaning is essential. Come on, pull up your sleeves and let’s start at once.”

Before I was aware, “He” had started dusting my heart. As he worked, he kept muttering. “Take a look at this! ‘Hope, which should be preserved most carefully, is buried deep in dust. No wonder that your heart is pressed.”

As he moved towards the deepest corners of my hears, he was saying, “You must learn to get rid of your disillusions in the past, as well.” “Don’t, stop it!” I wanted to say. “I may need them again…”
Raising an eyebrow, he threw me a significant glance…”Look,” he said. “See? All of them are irrelevant now.”

“From now on they are of no use and can only make your heart ache. I know: it is difficult to give up the past. But reminiscing and reliving are two different things. I have no objection to your recalling from time to time but please stop living with memories. Don’t forget that you cannot bring back the past. If you think you can rewind life like a film and alter the scenario, changing the end of the story, you are mistaken. Yesterday is left behind. Yet you can start a new story today and prepare a new “finale”.

No matter how his words jolted me, I knew he was right.
We worked ceaselessly all through the day. Ignoring my “buts and ifs”, he removed everything about the past which caused my heartaches. How peculiar! After all this work, instead of feeling exhausted, I felt as light as a bird. My hopes started budding once again.

Meanwhile “He” took one last look to see whether there remained anything in a corner, which could hurt me. After throwing away the padlocks I used to lock up my feelings he said, “Now your heart is free.” “Don’t let storms and tornadoes scare you. Remember, you need rainfall to see the rainbow afterwards. Most important, don’t ever let the young shoot of hope in your heart fade away.”

Wearily but hopefully, I said, “This time I did not give you a proper welcome, but I promise to meet you much more enthusiastically in the future.” Then I wrapped my arms around him and whispered into his ear:
“Welcome, spring!”

The Research Conference on Fethiye getting a Trademark in Tourism was held on the dates of the 7th and 8th of May. The conference was initiated by FETSO (Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry and organized successfully by a professional advisory firm. Unfortunately, although invitations were sent out, participation from the universities, public and local administrations, non-governmental organizations and representatives of the sector was not at the anticipated level. However, I must admit that the earnestness of attendants, the absentees were not really missed.
Due to my various liabilities to the company >I work for, I could not attend the first dayk of the conference. When I witnessed the dynamism and productivity of the workshops on the second day, I wondered what I had missed the first day and felt regretful.
One of the most interesting aspects of the conference was the endeavours to create a logo and a slogan for tourism in Fethiye. Various proposals were made, each more interesting than the other, and one could not help admiring the creative minds of the participants.
Like I shared with you in my previous article, we possess so numerous historical, natural and cultural treasures symbolizing Fethiye that one cannot bring one to the foreground and let the others be overshadowed…Iı is really a very hard task to choose one from Ölüdeniz, the Tomb of Amintas, Liquid Amber Tree, Tomato, the Sun, Pegasus and others.
In general logos based on the sun were considered and the drawing of a butterfly perched on Pegasus by one of the participants enhanced the joy of the others. The illustration of the Winged Horse of Tlos together with the Valley of Butterflies inspired all of us with new ideas.
The slogan of “FethiYES Holidays” was highly approved by the participants. Although it sounds a bit strained, I must say I found it interesting. The fact that the Turkish version cannot become a stereotype of the English may constitute a handicap.
The final report of the research conference will be handed to us within one or two weeks, I believe. On the basis of this report, we shall renew discussions about what should be done to get a trademark, what our strong points are and what are our weaknesses.
The main thing is to take our stand with the final decisions set out in the report and carry on the work proposed with the participation and collaboration of all concerned. If we are able to do this, we will not be hindered by serious mishaps in our efforts to get a trademark in tourism…

In Turkey it is the grass, rather than trees, which cause allergies with the pollens. In the springtime, the culprit is the trees and in the summer, it is the wheat and rye, and by the end of August it is sheep’s sorrel and stinging nettle.

Allergy is present everywhere in our life! It occurs at home, on the street, in the office, on holidays. Allergic complaints are increasing in all social circles. It is more evident in developed communities. Almost one in every five persons is allergic in one way or another. This may be due to food., environment or a pet. It is common knowledge that variations in life-style plays a major role in this increase. As we interfere with nature and upset its balance, nature counteracts in many ways. Allergy is one of them.
It is known that during the spring months, the sneezes and running noses are caused by pollens. Scientists claim that with the global warm-up, the season of pollens also prolongs and altered climatic conditions and air pollution threaten humanity with allergies throughout the year. Experts warn that at present 20 people out of every hundred fall victim to allergies and this figure increases in time.
Dr. Gülden Paşaoğlu Karakış, Specialist at Chest Disorders and Allergies of the Acıbadem Kadıköy Hospital, pointed out that allergic rhinitis disease popularly called “hay fever” has serious effects on the quality of life. Dr. Karakış said that numerous people refrained from consulting a doctor which results in an increase in patients suffering from asthma.

- If the parents are allergic, can the individual become allergic also?
-Yes,. if a person has allergic parents, there is a highly probable that he too will suffer from allergy. Furthermore, since stress affects the immune system, it may trigger allergies.

-Are pollens the main culprits for spring allergy?
-Turkey has an extreme abundance of plants. In these spring days when weather is warming up after winter, the number of pollens keep increasing. Needless to day, it is not possible to blame the pollens only. Pollens do not cause the disease. The body considers the pollen as a foreign matter and tries to get rid of it. For his purpose the body secretes a matter called histamine. The respiration system, the eyes and the membranes of the nose get infected. We may cite pollens of the grass, red oak, olive and even hazelnut trees and the flowers as causes. This is popularly called hay fever but is known as allergic rhinitis in medical language. Unfortunately, if the patient is not kept under control with a suitable treatment, this ailment lasts a life time.

-You say that pollens are present throughout the year. Can people suffer from allergy in the summer as well?
-Of course. First of all, the pollens of the grass growing in all seasons except winter are the main reason. Besides them, we can cite trees and herbaceous plants. The pollens named graminea of the grass are not innocent at all. Remember, they start growing in March and last until October. Similarly, the pollens of trees are activated in this season and may continue throughout summer months. In addition, many herbs such as stinging nettle, sheep’s sorrel also cause allergies.

-Does the temperature of the air play a role?
If the weather is cold, the pollen season shortens. In regions with warmer weather, they may have an early start and last longer. In areas with polluted air, pollens and allergies due to them are more frequent. The warm-up in the atmosphere unfortunately enhances the existence of pollens.

Oak in March,. Singing nettle in October
MARCH-APRIL: Pollens of red oak. hazelnut, olive, birch and poplar trees, maple, elm, ash tree, chestnut, and hornbeam
APRIL-MAY-JUNE: Pollens of herbs like grass… British grass, meadow grass, Car’s tail.
JUNE-AUGUST: Pollens of grains such as wheat, rye, corn and rice.
AUGUST-OCTOBER: Pollens of wormwood, white goosefoot, sheep’s sorrel, ribwort plantain, wheat grass, stinging nettle, foxtail grass, cock’s foot, phillagatis, cheat.

Allergy test through skin
It is naturally mot important to discover what the people are allergic to. While listening to the case history, various tests can be applied to determine the cause of the allergy. We have a chance to do this by making blood and skin tests. Results can be achieved by a skin test of 20 minutes and in 24-48 hours by blood tests.

Two shots are effective
-First method is the classical one, on a long term basis with a high probability of a cure.
-The second method is the one applied just before the season starts and continued for seven weeks which must be repeated every year. With this method, the patient will havew a quite comfortable spring season.

DRUGS GIVE TEMPORARY RELIEF
Patients are advised to keep away from whatever causes their allergies. There are some drugs and inoculations that keep the allergy under control, such as anti-allergic nose sprays containing cortisone…While in common colds anti-allergic drugs and nose sprays are used, in cases of asthma, mouth sprays are used to enlarge the respiratory pipes and to keep the disease under control.

In the antique period the name of Fethiye was Telmessos. It is ascertained that this town was founded at the border of Lycian and Carian civilizations during the 5th century B.C. The present day ruins indicate that the town was quite affluent with a high level of culture during the Hellenistic and Roman periods and a famous centre of prophecies dedicated to Apollon. The Lycian type rock tombs, sarcophagi, citadel and the theatre of the Antique Telmessos are ornaments of present-day Fethiye, standing in full splendour.

According to a mythological story related by Suidas, a historian of the Antique Period, probably based on the records of another historian before his time; At the time the Trojan War broke out, Lycian God Apollon fell in love with the daughter of Antenor, who opened up his house to Odyseus and Menelaos. Because the girl was retiring and bashful, he turned himself into a small and cute puppy. As the girl got used to him, he revealed his true identity and they made love. In a little while, they had a son who they named Telmessos. A city was founded in the name of the child on the Lycian border and Apollon assigned his son to this city as a prophet. One of the reasons Heredotus, the ancient historian, refers to Telmessos as “the city of prophets” and “centre of prophecy” is based on this legendary foundation. When Alexander the Great had a dream during his siege of Halicarnassos and asked the prophets of Telmessos to interpret it for him, the city became even more famous. However, some historians claim that the prophets who interpreted Alexander’s dream lived in a city near Bodrum called Telmissus which is reminiscent of the name Telmessos.

The name Telmessos does not come from ancient Greek. There is no record of its establishment or being colonized by the Greeks. Therefore, as it is the case of cities in various parts of Anatolia which are not of Greek origin, it is believed that the above legend was dreamt up. Some believe that to challenge the antique city of Delos in Greece and the predictions about the future of its prophets, Telmessos was assigned the task of being a centre of prophecies.

Further archaeological research is required to achieve definite details and discoveries to appease our curiosity on whether or not Telmessos was a city of prophecies in the past. However, certain social-communal events sustained since the Lycian times to our day shed some light on the subject same as archaeological researches. A very good sample of this is the traditional fortune telling by coffee grounds and by throwing broad beans in many villages of Fethiye.

As for me,. I think that if Telmessos had nothing to do with prophecies in the past, the villagers of Fethiye would not have been so keen onfortune telling. There is only a tiny question in my mind. Why is it that the present day fortune tellers do not display the same success as the famous prophets of the past who motivated the historical leaders with their predictions? In fact, we have not heard of any prophecies about the troubles we have faced so far from our prophets….

For some reasons, the government has adopted and followed a strict policy in not recognizing the minorities. Referring the Treaty of Lausanne, it has been claimed that those groups cannot have the right to enjoy certain rights and liberties as the non-Moslem ones do, since they are not referred therein. This claim has been the justification point, and whenever the ethnic and religious groups have brought up the case to the agenda, they have faced this justification. However, as for the Turkish communities in foreign countries, considerable efforts have been spent in order for them to be regarded as minority and to enjoy the rights granted to those groups. Despite the fact that their constitutions do not include any specific article concerning the Turkish communities and that they do not have any certain treaty with regard to their status, they claim that they are minorities and have the right to benefit from such rights.
The paradox is that when those people, who had once migrated mostly to some European states after 1960s and 1970s, have any problem concerning their education or identities, they have the right to enjoy the minority rights. In this sense, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands stand as the best examples. Particularly in Germany, there are only four national minorities recognized officially: the Danish minority, the Friesian ethnic minority in Germany, the German Sinti and Roma and the Sorbs. Other groups, coming to Germany later on such as the labours, including the Turks, and immigrants, are accepted as minorities. Likewise, in the Netherlands, the only official minority group is the Frisian minority; but the other immigrants and labour groups, including the Moroccans and Turks, are also accepted as minority in the society. Accordingly, these groups are granted some rights in order to continue their existence and identities. The relevant governments do not compel these minority groups to accept the German and Dutch identities and to erase their original characteristics as well as ethnic and religious backgrounds. In this regard, the existence of Turkish schools in both of these countries proves the tolerance towards the relevant communities. This is also confirmed by the Syriacs living in the Netherlands; as the state allows them to have education in their mother tongue and to open Syriac Orthodox Church and to exercise their religious services freely, most of which are not available and allowed in Turkey. For instance, having the right to get Turkish Language Course in elective courses, to open Turkish schools that gives education in Turkish is currently into practice in Germany, which stands as a good example for Turkey. While a school did not let the Turkish be spoken among the students, the authorities were accused of discrimination and repression, then Turkish people in Germany were considered as a minority group, even though it is not openly stated in the relevant Conventions that the Turkish nationals are minorities. On the other hand, those ethnic and religious groups in Turkey are not officially regarded as minority, as the justification of Turkish authorities is that these groups are not referred to in the Treaty of Lausanne, which is the basis. Further, not letting these groups in Turkey have their own schools to have education in their mother tongue and preventing them to get their mother tongues as elective courses, or teaching them a certain type of religion is not considered as discrimination and repression. It should not be forgotten that Germany was once accused of discrimination and racism when there were not Turkish elective courses at German schools, and then the permission for Turkish courses by the German authorities was announced as a victory by the Turks. In consequence, would it be right and wise to call such preventions in Turkey as discriminatory and racist acts as the Turks once implied, since both of the cases bear a striking resemblance to each other?

This year we celebrated Tourism Week between the dates of the 15th and 22nd of April, 2010. Since this is a traditional celebration, various activities were organized in all tourism regions in Turkey simultaneously, stressing the significance of the tourism sector. Problems were discussed and solutions were sought. In these days where the economic crisis still reigns, it was related to the public once again what a prominent role tourism plays in creating job opportunities and seasonal benefits which are essential factors in our lives.
Just as we were getting into a new season with great expectations, once again a misfortune upset all our calculations.
On the date the celebrations of Tourism Week were starting, the volcano underneath the “Eyjafjallaokull” glacier in Iceland erupted, with ascending clouds of smoke and steam. The volcano erupted twice within one month. As the ice melted, clouds of smoke and steam rose up to the sky. Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes due to floods.
Because of the clouds of ash ascending from the “Eyfhallayokull” volcano, chaos reigned in European air traffic ranging from the Atlantic Ocean to Russia and from Northern Pole to Bulgaria. It was ascertained that the volcano caused the largest interruption on air traffic in Europe since the Second World War. Due to the fact that the pollution caused by clouds of smoke would interfere with the running of engines of the planes, in many countries including Poland, England, Austria, Denmark and Belgium, all or a great number of airports were closed down while there were serious cancellations in France, Finland, Germany, Russia and Spain. On the other hand, Sweden, Norway and Ireland allowed some flights to be resumed as of yesterday. Within one week, approximately 17 thousand flights were cancelled. The volcanic clouds of ash affected the air traffic as far as Asia-Pasific. Thousands of passengers from Wellington to Tokyo, from Hong Kong to Singapore were worried about cancellation of flights since a large portion of the European air space was closed. Experts stated that if eruptions of the volcano continued, the disruptions in the air transportation might occur for another 6 months.
Last week the tourism week was overshadowed with the anxiety of whether or not the clouds of ash would reach Istanbul and the rest of Turkey. We wished to talk about nice things but could not help thinking about unpleasant things. The first charter flights of the season were disrupted. While searching for resolutions to eliminate the problems of tourists whose flights were cancelled at the Dalaman and Antalya Airports, we were also taken aback when we were informed of cancellation of reservations of some tourists who had previously purchased their holiday package tours due to insecurity of flights as well as health problems that might be encountered.
Inspired by the promotional and marketing activities through the winter, we were led to believe that the 2010 season would be better than the previous one when we met with misfortune once again. I sincerely wish a good and most beneficial season for all tourism operators.
