Photography, Fethiye, Lights…
The name of Fethiye in the Antique Period was “Telmessos” which meant “land of light” İN THE Lycian language. On the other hand, light is the basis of all visual arts and photograph is based on light! Isn’t true, therefore, when Light and Fethiye get together, the first thing that comes to mind is photography?
When the photographer is in Fethiye, displaying the panorama in Fethiye bathed in light, and while light is the most essential material for the photographer, what else is there?
Our dear master and teacher, Faruk Akbaş, writes in his book “Travelling in Anatolia”.
“When asked, ‘Do you like Aegean or Mediterranean?’, Fethiye replied, “they are both my brothers. We have grown together over centuries and are continuing to grow. My blues and greens spreading out to the horizon layer by layer and my coves which shelter wanderers are all their creations.” Besides the sea and nature, Fethiye displays different historical and cultural features to the visitors in every season.
While some crawl in the calm waters of Ölüdeniz, others strive to advance on the inaccessible paths of Saklıkent Canyon. Those coming to the Belcekiz beach, extending into the sea from the slopes of Babadağ, watch the multi-coloured paraglides soaring on the blue sky among centuries-old olive trees and red pine forests. Fethiye is the land of impassioned lovers of nature, the sea, adventure and the small of iodine. Embracing its brothers of the sea, it awaits those with a wandering spirit.
“The Fethiye Photography Club was established in May, 2006. We attended a course on photography, organized by the Cultural Centre of the Fethiye Municipality and were trained for two months. Afterwards we decided to carry on our activities as a club under the guidance of our teacher, Faruk Akbaş. Nowadays we have more than 30 members.
Every month we organize week-end excursions for the purpose of further training, documentation and entertainment. We are guided by nature and history in this respect.
For us photography is a way of getting away from the run-of-the-mill of contemporary life, to familiarize ourselves and relay way of living, and enriching our feelings of love and compassion. In short, it is a means of recording our feelings.”
Today and Tomorrow
At present, the Fethiye Photography Club has become a centre where members are trained further and enjoy creating pictures. It is on its way to achieving an institutional identity.
The Club holds its meetings at the Cultural Centre of the Fethiye Municipality. Once every month it plays host to a master of photography, providing an opportunity for its members to develop their methods and an advantage of sharing the experience of a master.
On these pages, you will find a selection of photographs on “Fethiye” taken by the members of our club. We hope you enjoy them…

    Hello,
I am a member of Leighton Buzzard Photographic Club in England. I also have a property in Hisaronu.
    We have about 40 members.
Recently we had competition between our club and one in New Zealand after a member met someone on holiday there. It was good fun and the interchange of images and club profiles was very stimulating.
It would be good to do the same with Fethiye and I was wondering if it would be possible.

I am at the apartment from 2th to 1st February and would like to meet a representative of your club to discuss the posibility.

I hope you think it is a good idea and look forwards to hearing from you. I will have transport during the week.
I have a small photo business but please mail me on or phone the apartment. We should be in mornings and early evenings. 02526166141
