The collection of used batteries continue by the joint efforts of the Directorate of Environment Protection and Preservation and the Municipal Police Force of the Fethiye Municipality. Teams have collected 3 tons of used batteries from 97 separate collection centres. These batteries, which are collected to ensure recycling, were forwarded to TAP (Association of Portable Battery Manufacturers and Importers) at Kocaeli, the only establishment authorized in this field by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

Selver Hatice Soylu, Environmental Engineer of the Fethiye Municipality furnished information in this connection, saying that when the batteries were haphazardly thrown around or into the garbage bin, they decomposed in time and caused pollution
in water, earth and atmosphere because they contained heavy metals like mercury, lead and cadmium.

Soylu stressed that used batteries should be kept in bags or jars, separately from other household wastes, adding, “Thus we can prevent harmful effects of the batteries on natural resources. Similar to all developed countries, used batteries, which are harmful to the environment and human health, are now collected separately and are recycled in our country as well. Not only used batteries but all wastes harmful to environment should be recycled. As Fethiye Municipality we have been able to collect 3 tons of used batteries in 3 months We can say that the residents of Fethiye have displayed a sensitive community spirit. We thank everyone who has lent us support in this project.”

Meanwhile, the Director of the Municipal Police Force, Halime Ok, stressed the damage caused to the environment by used batteries, saying,. “As Municipality, we have placed collection boxes at certain points of our town such as governmental offices, markets and photographers. We then collect the used batteries placed in these boxes by our citizens sensitive to environment and send them on to the Association of Portable Battery Manufactures and Importers (TAP) which is the only establishment authorised by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. to collect, transport, store and eliminate used batteries. In this connection we especially request our citizens to avoid throwing used batteries into the waste paper basket at homes or offices, and to place them to the battery collection box which is nearest to them.”
