Behçet Saatçı claims that young accommodations are needed for development of tourism in Fethiye
In spite of the existence of renowned regions like Ölüdeniz and Göcek, there are no 5-star hotels in Fethiye, Mugla, where the most recently built hotel is aged 15 years. Behçet Saatçı, the Mayor of Fethiye said that Fethiye needed land to build young accommodations and establishments and that they were working on this subject.
Behçet Saatçı, who has been the Mayor of Fethiye for the last 11 years, furnished certain details in respect of tourism activities in town. Saatçı pointed out that when Fethiye is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is agriculture and tourism, in spite of which tourism is not appreciated appropriately. Reminding that tourism in Fethiye does not last for 6 months, as claimed, but only for 90 days, and younger accommodations are needed since the existing facilities in Fethiye are insufficient. Behçet Saatçı pointed out that there were only 4 holiday villages and no 5-star hotels in Fethiye and that the most recently built hotel is 15-16 years old. .Saatçı said, “If you ask any native of Fethiye on the street to comment on the matter of 5-star hotels, you would get the same reply. I will not say anything different myself. Being a mayor for the last 10 years, I have to stress certain points. Needless to say, Fethiye needs young accommodations. If I remember correctly, with the exception of small boutique hotels, there are no younger establishments constructed after 1994-95. Our four holiday villages are booked up to eighty per cent but it is a fact that we lack small hotels.”
Mayor Behçet Saatçı added that a new tourism development plan was needed for Çalış and negotiations were under say in this respect with ÖÇKK. In this connection the tradesmen at Çalış had to give consent to the plan, otherwise it could not be put into practice.
The Mayor of Fethiye, Behçet Saatçı then said that the transport of Highways, Waterworks and Forestry Departments out of town exceeded their authority as local administration and made the following remarks: “If a new investor comes to me and says: ‘I wish to make an investment for an establishment of 1000 beds in Fethiye, show me an appropriate area’ no space is available. This is one of the greatest problems in Fethiye. I cannot speak of transporting Highways, DSI and Forestry Department out of town, which is pronounced by everyone, since this exceeds our authority as a local administration.”
