Presidency of Special Environmental Preservation intervenes for the Gulf of Fethiye

The leading non-governmental organizations carried the matter of cleaning the Gulf of Fethiye, which has been under discussion for years with no significant resolution, to Ankara. The Chairman of the Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Akif Arıcan; the chairman of the Fethiye branch of Ak Party, Mustafa Ali Türkan; and the Chairman of the Fethiye Chamber of Artisans and Artists, Mehmet Soydemir took the matter with the Presidency of Special Environmental Preservation in Ankara in an effort to find a way out to clean up the gulf. On the basis of their presentation, the Presidency of Special Environmental Preservation asked for a meeting to be held in February or March, headed by Ahmet Altıparmak, the Governor of Mugla, with the participation of all organizations and establishments on the subject of the pollution in the gulf. An Administrative Plan is to be drawn up at this meeting where steps will be established for the cleaning of the gulf with an effort to resolve this matter. The Chairman of the Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FTSO), Akif Arıcan gave details of their negotiations in Ankara which were most beneficial. Arıcan informed that prominent steps were taken to prevent sea pollution and stressed that everyone should contribute to the project so that people could swim within the gulf. During the meeting with ÖÇK, it was pointed out that three fourths of the gulf was filled out and this would continue unless necessary preventive steps were taken. The Chairman of FTSO, Arıcan, also said that during the meeting they underlined the urgency of regulating the rivers polluting the sea. Akif Arıcan said that they had relayed heir wish to be able to swim in the Gulf of Fethiye in the near future to the President of ÖÇK, adding,” During the rest of our negotiations, the endeavours in general with respect to the preparation of an Administrative Plan for the Gulf of Fethiye, it was decided to ensure the participation of all organizations and establishments. Within this framework a symposium will be organized to obtain the views of all parties concerned regarding the preventive steps to be taken in respect of pollution in the gulf. This symposium will take place if not in February, then definitely in March.” Arıcan further pointed out that the main source of income in the region was tourism which suffered seriously due to increasing pollution of the gulf where it was impossible to wade into the sea, commenting as follows: “The revenues in tourism is diminishing every day. Taking into consideration that The increase of income from tourism in our town would prevent unemployment and enrich the economy of the country with the incurred foreign exchange, the cleaning of the Gulf of Fethiye becomes even more significant. Our town made a contribution in taxes in the amount of 130 million TL to the central budget during 2008, and when the gulf is cleaned up, the income from taxes will definitely become threefold minimally.” |
