Kenan Evren, who led the Sept. 12, 1980 coup and later became Turkey’s seventh president, wants to sell his villa located in Marmaris’ Artmutalan neighborhood. The three-story house has six rooms, with separate bathrooms in all the rooms, and is priced at 975,000 euros. The price is very high compared to similar houses in the region, according to Yusuf Kenan Akkuş, president of the Marmaris Real Estate Dealers Association. “Many people are interested in buying the former president’s villa, but they give up once they learn the price,” Akkuş told the Doğan news agency. The house is situated in front of a pine forest and has a view of the Marmaris Gulf. The garden has a convertible swimming pool and lemon, grapefruit, orange and avocado trees. The halls are covered with famous Afyon marble while the walls are covered with Kütahya tiles. Evren settled in the villa in 1991, when his house was the only building in the region. The area has since become more popular and many houses have now been built in the area. Citing health problems, Evren decided to leave Marmaris in March 2007 and put his villa up for sale. “The first price in Evren’s mind was 4 million Turkish Liras, but after consulting with real estate dealers, he lowered it to 975,000 euros (approximately 2 million liras),” said Akkuş. “But the real value of the house is around 450,000 euros. We have told this to Evren, but he insisted on the price.” Akkuş said many potential buyers, including fans of the former president, decided not to buy the house when they were told the price. “He will never be able to sell his house at such a high price,” he said.
