The most outstanding activities during 2009 are undoubtedly the second-hand sales. What pleased me greatly was not so much the visitors to the second-hand sales but the evaluation of old items in this way and the fact that it has become a trend in Fethiye. Although I am aware that the car boot sales or sales from car parks are organized frequently in foreign countries as well as the fact that this activity was introduced in this region thanks to our foreign guests who have settled here, the establishment and popularizing of this event have also been through their efforts in the early stages. Due to increased interest, nowadays a second-hand bazaar is set up within the framework of the Çalış Carnival at Çalış (first Sunday of every month), and another one at Hisarönü (the second Sunday of every month). Recently still another one has been inaugurated. Organized by the municipality and set up at the Tuesday Market on the first Wednesday of every month.

I believe that in addition to second-hand bazaars in Fethiye, we need to concentrate on the use of cloth bags and try to promote it. In so far as Turkey is a country which has recently working on taking steps for the environmental preservation, we should inaugurate and enhance such campaigns.

It can be said that 2009 has also been a beginning for home-made wines. The home-made wines group met from time to time and organized tours, tasting the first home-made wines.

While reviewing the events through the year, the first ones that come to my mind are the activities of the Fethiye Photography Club (generally at the Fethiye Cultural Centre); Agaric and Mushroom Festival at Üzümlü; Burn’s Night (by Çalış Carnival), Exhibition on the World Women’s Day (on the 8th of March); Display of Ecological Products, Second Yunus Nadi Days during April; the Çalış Carnival; Handiwork Bazaar (in May); Ölüdeniz Culture and Art Festival (in June); Ölüdeniz Air Games (October); Permaculture meeting (November) and X-mas bazaar (December). In addition we went through the whole year with exhibitions such as the Association of Painters and Patchwork, concerts and other activities.

The taste of the brazier parties and picnics in beautiful weather conditions has been memorable. The essential thing that makes where we live special is the people around us, therefore I wish you a happy new year surrounded with your beloved ones.

I also wish you happy and healthy days.
