Ramadan continues in Turkey. The sound of drums which we hear every night might amaze those who are unfamiliar with the custom. I would like to make a reminder in this connection: even if we are not fasting, it is our tradition to tip the drummer who rings our doorbell during the Bayram. If you tip him, you might also ask him to sing you a few quatrains.

The old mosque needs a mast,
It takes a brave heart to say it,
Although I have had something to eat,
My colleague wants a peace of börek.

I started out with God’s name,
I saluted to the left and right,
Oh, my patrons of might,
Let your prayers be blessed.

We have reached Ramadan at last,
And what a blessing it is,
Fasting throughout this month
Lends people a wonderful peace.
