Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin, who launched a golf ball into orbit in space from the International Space Station (ISS), performed the world’s highest tee off. Tyurin gently hit the specially designed golf ball, with a mass of just 3 grams, which has been calculated to travel up to one million miles. The tee-time was delayed by about 77 minutes due to a stuck hatch and overheated suit.

“OK, there it goes,” said Tyurin after his tee off for a Canadian Element 21 Golf company commercial. Tyurin, who has played golf twice in his life, said “It went pretty far. It was an excellent shot.”

NASA said the ball will remain in orbit for about three days, but the golf company predicts the ball will travel for more than three years.

Astronaut Alan Shepard whipped out a six-iron on the moon during his 1971 Apollo 14 mission. Russian cosmonaut Tiyurin returned to his activities to be performed during the space walk with American astronaut Michale Lopez-Alegria after the tee.
